County Championships update

Burley to face Wilson In Amateur Championship Final

23rd May 2015
Trevose GC and former Merlin GC member Carl Burley performed excellently yesterday through two rounds of matchplay to reach the final of the 2015 Cornwall Amateur Championship. The 23 year old set out on Friday morning against County Team member Rob MacGregor himself much fancied to lift the title. Burley was 1 up through 5 holes and he increased his lead to be 2 up  through 12. Despite MacGregor hitting 4 iron to 3 feet on 13, birdies from Burley  at 14 and 15 sealed his 3&2 victory. In the afternoon he faced another county team player in the form of Jon Hancock (Newquay). Yet again Burley punched above his weight to claim another scalp. One up through 5 holes and 2 up by the 7th was then reduced to 1 as Hancock birdied the 8th. Two birdies from Burley at 9 and 11 increased his lead and a run of 4 pars was then followed by a match winning shot as he hit it to 18 inches on the par 4 16th to win 4&2 and to book his final berth.
In today's final he will face established County Team member Perranporth's Conor Wilson. The 24 year old who has also never appeared in a county final, had an emphatic 5&4 win over clubmate Matt Lock before beating semi final opponent Josh Greenaway (Bowood Park) 2&1. Wilson who has won multiple county events will fancy his chances against Burley whilst conscious his opponent has had a great week to date and has nothing to lose in the final.
The final gets underway at 0900 Saturday morning, although the current foggy conditions at Bude may interfere with the scheduled start.
Good luck to both Carl and Conor!
