Ladies Open Day

This week Merlin Golf Club held their Ladies Open Competition. 57 ladies entered in teams of 3 with the 2 best stableford scores counting on each hole. The day started off a little chilly but soon turned warm and sunny. A strong easterly wind prevailed however,
which posed quite a challenge to many. Afterwards Jane Haytread, on behalf of Merlin Ladies, welcomed everyone and thanked them for entering. Jane then presented prizes. The winning team after count back with 75 points was Joyce Cain, Sallyann Stacey and Chris Smith from Newquay Golf Club. Coming second, and also from Newquay, were Meg Platton, Trish Poyner and Mary May, with 75 points. In third place was the Merlin team of Eileen Avery, Eileen Phipps and Sue Sykes with 74 points. In fourth place after count back with 73 points were Debbie Cain, Janey Barker and Liz Ward from Newquay. The prize for the best score for the front 9 went to Liz Hannaford, Dawn Dennis and Sue Wijesingha from Merlin with 38 points. The Enodoc team of Kath Biddle, Suzie Willmott and Barbara Willmott won the prize for best back 9 after count back with 37 points. Prizes were also presented to Debbie Cain and Trish Poyner who managed birdie 2s on the 5th hole and to Joyce Cain, for her birdie 2 on the 1st. Nearest the pin on the 5th hole was awarded to Debbie Cain and longest drive on the 17th went to Kath Biddle.

Competition date changes

Please note the Combined Captains Cup on the 20th March has been postponed due to Merlin playing in the Presidents Trophy final at St Enodoc and the Falcon Inn Trophy has been moved from the 12th March to the 16th April.

Presidents Cup

The CTC final will take place at St Enodoc GC on Sunday 20th March 2016 commencing at 8.00am with the Presidents Trophy final going put immediately afterwards,
The President’s Trophy - in its fourth year - will see new combatants in the final after wins for Merlin and Looe. At Trevose, Merlin recorded an impressive 7 - 2 win over China Fleet, whilst the other match at St Enodoc proved to be a much tighter affair. Things were evenly balanced at 4 matches apiece and it came down to Cornwall Seniors team member and 1978 County Champion Andy Rowe to secure the berth for Looe as he found the winning putt on the 18th hole and created a 5-4 win for his team.

County News

County Men's Squad Get Together Sat 30th January 2016 Trevose G&CC
West Cornwall GC's 15 year old Finn Rule was an impressive winner of today's county men's pre-season get together at Trevose G&CC. In the individual stableford competition and with 19 hopefuls taking part in cold windy but dry conditions the Lelant club's 4 handicap county junior was playing the course for the first time in competition and returned a total of 37 points to win on countback from Aaron Stephens (Newquay) and Cary Clark (Merlin).
With County Captain David Kneebone looking on, Rule eclipsed some of his peers with an excellent round of golf. One handicapper Stephens, who has represented the county at men's level previously, was the winner of the CGU Champion of Champions Depot Cup event at Falmouth in September 2015 and his good form continues. The unheralded Clark off 2 also produced an excellent performance as the trio found themselves at the top of the leadeboard.
Trevose G&CC's own junior George Leigh was another to return a fine score of 36 points together with clubmate and 2015 Amateur Championship runner up Carl Burley. The 13 year old Leigh was playing alongside Rob MacGregor and Matt Lock, both of whom were impressed with the youngsters game.
37 - Rule, Stephens & Clark
36 - Leigh & Burley
35 - Cris Fleming (Perranporth)
34 - Tom Rowe (Tehidy Park)
33 - Joe Reynard (Truro), Rob MacGregor (Tehidy Park), Matt Lock (Newquay)

County Call up's

Congratulations to Cary Clark and Zach Burrough on being called up for the Cornwall County squad !!! Well done boys !!!

Merlin News

The weather is not good. The course has been closed a lot despite bears best efforts for which we are appreciative. He has managed to get the back six holes open most of the time and a few of us have attempted to get out. To give you some idea of how bad the weather has been I believe Colsey only managed to get out and play on ten occasions over the Christmas period.

All competitions have been cancelled so there are no results to report. Mr Mark Davies is still on fire, according to Taff.

I played with Jody Clark one Saturday morning and despite the near gale force winds blowing across the thirteenth he hit a drive so hard it stayed as straight as any drive I've ever seen, by the time it finish rolling up the cut grass it was only nine or ten feet short of the ladies tees.

The January medal was cancelled but it is due to be rescheduled for the 24th of January. Please get up to the club and get your name down on the sheet.

There are a few of the merlin team tops missing which Mr Captain wants back. This is apparently Jim McKenzies fault and so he has offered to buy everyone who returns one a drink, which is good because I've got one. Many apologies to Rob for my still having one and if anyone else has one please bring it back and claim your free drink from Jim next time you see him. We'll never see him again. !!

Hopefully the weather will improve soon and we can get back to the golf. Ben
